A Memory of the ’74 Grange Hall Fire

By Scott Teitsworth

I was on the first-in paid company of firefighters when the Skyline Grange burned down in 1974. Coming from the 185th and Sunset Highway station, we found the building burning furiously upon arrival. In those days there were no hydrants and water had to be delivered by tanker. As soon as the fire was nearly extinguished the water would run out and there would be a twenty minute wait for more water, during which the fire built back up to a roaring blaze. I will never forget being inside on a hose line and seeing the entire interior around me engulfed in flames. Eventually the building was destroyed despite the efforts of a large number of volunteer and paid firefighters working through the night.
