SOLV Essay
by Laurel Erhardt May 2004
It’s Sunday evening, April 25th, 2004 and the SOLV dumpster sits in my front yard heaping full. Who would ever have thought that a pile of garbage would bring a smile to one’s face? It was a very rewarding weekend as neighbors, and SOLV volunteers from out of our neighborhood, brought bag after bag of garbage for the dumpster. To know that all of this garbage would now be off our streets took away some of the anger for those who dumped it there in the first place! And, once again, I renew my appreciation of all the good people of the earth who care enough to get involved. There are more than we know.
I met some who were new to the neighborhood; My math teachers husband; the bluebird ladies partner, the group from Moreland road. Some who pulled though we hadn’t seen in decades. “How long you guys lived up here?” - “Well, more ‘n 25 years.” – “You’re kidding, has it been that long?”
There were stories of the day. The turkey vulture who was standing on the ground, atypically close. Close observation, and a sense of smell, determined he was feeding. One litter patrol brought in 7 bags of video tapes. Lots of really good movies. In disbelief that these had been thrown out, they were looked over and found to be from the Lake Oswego Library. The library was called, they were thrilled the tapes were found, knew their tapes had been disappearing but didn’t know where or how. The police will be investigating.
Some left with “good junk” every time they brought “bad junk.” A good racing tire that must have fallen off a trailer. An old wheelbarrow that came in left with the next group who were going to turn it into a planter.
It’s a little too hot today for this Oregonian. I’m glad that the hardest work was yesterday morning when it was cooler. As the day begins to cool down, I sit in my front yard sipping a cool drink, giving my old muscles a rest while soaking in the view of the setting sun behind a full dumpster. Ahhhhhh!
