SRN Summer Gathering Next Sunday
All neighbors & friends are welcome to attend SRN's Summer Gathering next Sunday, Aug. 21. This year it will be at the Skyline Grange (on Skyline between McNamee and Newberry Roads) from 1-5 PM.
A new feature this year is a celebration of local artists & crafts people who will display and sell their wares upstairs in the Grange Hall during the Gathering. They have each donated some very special items for our fundraising raffle and auction, so look for those.
The artists who will be there include: Zoe Bacon (glass & metal sculpture & more), John Grtitzmacher (handmade garden tools), James Lyons (jewelry), Cindy Roach (ceramics), Sue Kenney (creative clothing & more), Ken Pincus (ceramics), Rick Wilding (botanical body care products), Jeremiah Nadir (leatherwork and moccasins), Barb Jensen (ceramics), Kelly Sue Munson
(holiday wreaths) and Nancy Hamer (stuffed animals).
Here are some reminders so you can better enjoy your visit:
Parking at the Grange is somewhat limited so please consider car-pooling with your neighbors or friends. Enter the parking lot from the west end only, opposite McNamee Road; attendants will direct you. If the Grange parking lot fills, you are welcome to park at Skyline School (about 1 mile west). No parking along Skyline Blvd., please.
There will be shuttles to take people to the Grange and back. (still looking for larger vehicles and drivers for this service - give us a call if you can help)
It's a potluck, so please bring a main dish, salad or dessert to share. Don't forget serving utensils!
It's a fundraiser to support the nonprofit programs of Skyline Ridge Neighbors, so please bring your checkbook and get ready to bid, or buy a raffle ticket, for some cool stuff.
Bring a hat since we will be eating outdoors behind the Grange Hall, enjoying the sun and music by local musicians. There will some shade available too.
The Gathering starts at 1 PM and the full schedule of events will be published in a special edition of the Newsline next week
If you can volunteer to help before, during or after the Gathering, please contact Cindy at 503-629-9700 or cindybanks [at] gmail [dot] com. Your help for an hour or two would be much appreciated!
See you at the Summer Gathering next Sunday!
FARM & FOREST:
There are lots of reasons to have a written forest management plan. You need one to be a member of the Tree Farm system. You need one to obtain cost-share funding. You can use it to plan and keep track of future management activities.
There are also lots of reasons why most landowners don’t have a management plan. The fun of woodland ownership is in the doing, not in the writing down what you have done or are going to do! Writing a plan takes time and a certain level of knowledge, and having a professional write one for you takes money.
If you’ve been putting off writing or updating your forest management plan, this fall is the opportunity to git-’er-done. OSU Extension will be conducting a four-session Mentored Management Planning <
http://extension.oregonstate.edu/columbia/sites/default/files/mmp_2011_flyer.pdf>workshop in St. Helens. You’ll be guided through the writing process and will be paired with an experienced mentor who can provide one-on-one assistance. Work on your plan for “homework” between sessions, and by Thanksgiving you’ll have finished the writing and can get back to the doing!
Dates: Wednesday evenings, Sept. 14, Sept. 28, Oct. 12, Nov. 9
Location: OSU Extension Service, St. Helens
Cost: $40 per family/ownership
SKYLINE ELEMENTARY:
Skyline School Family and Friends -- Save the date:
Sunday, August 21st 12:30 to 4:30.
Join us in sprucing up Skyline School, meet the new principal, and catch up with classmates and friends.
This is a special Care Day and we will be joined by Portland Community Church, where Skyline parent Ron Kincaid is pastor. We will not have a Care Day on the PPS-wide Sat. Aug 27th date.
Note: Sunday 8/21 is the same day as the Skyline Neighbors Summer Gathering at the Skyline Grange from 1-5 p.m. We know that many folks may wish to attend both events, and might therefore choose to leave early or come late to Skyline. That's fine!
Looking for Leaders:
As in the past, we can assign project team leaders on-site. However, it would be a big help to have at least 6 adult and kid project team leaders identified to be Weed Identifiers. If interested, your job will be to help show volunteers what to pull and what to leave. This makes a big difference. Skyline Steward Jinnet Powel will train you. (will send you photos and will meet at 11:30 for set up).
Have other skills willing to share? We’re looking for someone willing to provide guidance on tree-trimming for the maples by the garden boxes. Contact jinnetpowel [at] comast [dot] net<jinnetpowel [at] comast [dot] net (mailto:jinnetpowel [at] comast [dot] net)> if interested.
Tasks for the Grounds will primarily include:
Weeding beds and gravel path; cutting blackberry; pruning, and collecting seed heads
Tools to bring:
Hand weeding tools ( gloves, trowels, weeding picks, knee-pads)
Edging tools
Pruning sheers
Loppers
Rakes
Shovels
If you can bring any of the following…
wheelbarrow
weed-whip
compactor (to firm up sections of the path)
brush cutter (for H. blackberry)
saw-on-a stick (for trimming tree branches)
…or if you would like to make a donation of any of the following materials/services, please contact jinnetpowel [at] comcast [dot] net<jinnetpowel [at] comcast [dot] net (mailto:jinnetpowel [at] comcast [dot] net)>
Yard debris bags
Heavy-duty black plastic (up to 10 yrds) (to smother single clumps of blackberry once cut)

Compost bin (in style of Metro’s)
