COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS:

Illegal Dumping at Skyline Grange

About one month ago a huge load of year debris (mostly tree limbs) was dumped at Skyline Grange.  This was upsetting to Grange members since they have worked hard and long over this past year to remove invasive vegetation, non-native trees, and unhealthy trees in its woodland requiring much effort chipping wood which was given to community members in need of mulch.  This illegal dump will require the expense of more chipping and manpower.  We hope the offender will volunteer to help with the upcoming woodland work parties at the Grange on Saturdays, September 10 and October 1 from 9-noon.

West Multnomah SWCD Received Governor's Grant

District Manager Dick Springer, of the West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District accepted a $10,000 Governor's Fund for the Environment Grant today at the World Trade Center in Portland. The grant will be used to fund an Agriculture Pesticide Collection Event planned for the Sauvie Island and West Multnomah County areas on November 4, 2011.

"It's an honor to be included in this esteemed group of non-profit organizations that are doing the on-the-ground work to protect and repair our natural areas across the state of Oregon," says Springer. The award recognizes outstanding work in conservation in the Lower Columbia River Basin.

The Pesticide Collection Event will be professionally managed by Clean Harbors Environmental and is aimed at farmers and businesses that either use or have used pesticides and other chemicals in the past. Many times, chemicals are outdated or no longer needed or wanted, but end up sitting in sheds and barns because owners aren't sure how to dispose of them. This event gives landowners a way to legally and safely dispose of the chemicals before they run the risk of seeping into groundwater and nearby water supplies.

The Oregon Governor's Fund for the Environment is supported by pollution penalties. Since its inception in 2005, polluters have been ordered to pay nearly $5 million into the fund. Former Governor Ted Kulongoski and the United States Attorney's office created the fund with the goal of establishing a sustainable revenue source dedicated to local environmental cleanup and restoration focused on preserving and protecting Oregon rivers, watersheds, fish and wildlife.

Jeff Trandahl, executive director and CEO of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation said, "The goal of these grants is to improve water quality for people and wildlife."

West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District mission: "Conserve and protect soil and water resources for people, wildlife and the environment."
