ENVIRONMENT & FARM & FOREST:
Pollinator Tour Highlights Native Plants
A group of 18 landowners from the Portland area attended a guided Pollinator Tour Friday, June 24, presented by West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District. The group, representing owners of both large and small parcels of land in urban and rural Multnomah County, first viewed an urban pollinator hedgerow at Montgomery Park. They discovered how important site preparation and soil content is to the survival of native plants, particularly in a poor drainage area, and what type of plants to consider for such a planting. The group then traveled to Sauvie Island to view two different pollinator plantings; one at the Sauvie Island Grange and the other on Metro property near Sauvie Island Organics.
WMSWCD's Urban Conservationist Mary Logalbo and Kathy Pendergrass of the Natural Resources Conservation Service talked about the decline of bee species in the US and native bees, in particular. They urged landowners to not only plant native species for pollinators but to also leave some open ground for bees that build their nests there. A wide variety of native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers can be used to attract pollinators and you can find a list on the WMSWCD website. Lists are also available from other websites such as the NRCS, OSU Extension Services, the City of Portland and others.
There are many reasons to plant a pollinator hedgerow, beyond the importance of pollination activity for our local food and crops. For instance, they are ideal for wildlife habitat, preserving privacy or shielding your land from nearby insecticide applications.
The day wrapped up with a small picnic near the historic Bybee-Howell House including fresh, organically grown vegetables from Sauvie Island Organics.
For more information on pollinators and how to establish your own pollinator plantings, contact Mary Logalbo at 503/238-4775, ext. 103 or visit our website at www.wmswcd.org.

Bastien Looking for a Home Bird dog needs new home. His name is Bastien and his pics are attached. He needs to be in a home without chickens. He’s got a great nose and he’s a born hunting dog. When I’ve caught him with our chickens they’ve been alive (while he’s been carrying them around), it’s only been cases where we’ve been gone and prolonged “playing” killed them. He’s extremely disciplined when it comes to sitting and staying as well. Contact Tara atwtrdragyn [at] gmail [dot] com or Jared at jgosson [at] osbar [dot] org .
