N.W. Thompson Road slide repair begins
Multnomah County is using an innovative new product made by a local firm to repair a landslide that closed N.W. Thompson Road earlier this year.  The road is expected to reopen by mid-December.
The landslide on the downhill side of the road threatened to erode the shoulder and eastbound traffic lane.  Multnomah County has a small budget for emergency road repairs.  Last winter’s heavier rainfall led to more and slides than in a typical year.  The county lacked funds to repair all the slides.  After researching several options, the county chose a product made by Maverick Solutions of Lake Oswego to repair the Thompson Road slide.
The repair creates layers of plastic netting covered with gravel and lined with bags of earth all tied together by a system of plastic connectors. The end result provides the stability of a conventional slide repair and allows the hillside edge to be re-planted, adding strength and environmental benefits.
The technology developed by Maverick Solutions has been used locally to stabilize banks of rivers as a flood control measure and is increasingly being used to repair landslides.
The damaged section of N.W. Thompson Road is in a rural area between N.W. Cornell Road and N.W. Skyline Blvd. Until the road reopens, through traffic should detour to N.W. Cornell Road and N.W. Skyline Blvd.  Homes on N.W. Thompson Road can be accessed from N.W. Cornell and N.W. Skyline.
Multnomah County maintains N.W. Thompson Road and more than 300 miles of roads and bridges.  For more information, visit www.multco.us/roads

GOVERNMENT:

Have you ever wondered why the market value of your property goes down but the property taxes still increase?
That question and more are answered in a report released this month by the Multnomah County Tax Supervising and Conservation Commission (TSCC). The report, titled "A Recent History of Oregon's Property Tax System," focuses on how changes in the property tax system have affected Multnomah County taxing districts.
Copies of the 133-page report can be obtained by the calling the commission's office at 503-988-3054 or at http://tsccmultco.com/publications.html
