He will discuss staffing, response times, involvement of other law enforcement agencies and other aspects of the local patrols. He will also talk about the 911 call center, when and how to report illegal or suspicious activity, what to do to make your home and neighborhood safer such as the Sheriff’s Office Vacation Check program, etc.

COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS:

Volunteer for Grange's Soup Supper:  4th annual Saturday Soup Supper will be on November 13 from 5-8 p.m. at Skyline Grange.  Please volunteer to help make this a true home cooked dinner and a successful social evening.  Cook up a big batch of hearty soup, make salads, bake breads, and make desserts - a perfect meal for a foggy, drizzly, dark November night.  We need help with food, set-up, serving, and cleaning up.  If you would like to cook, help, or get more information contact Tracy Waters (503-285-2530 or bluewaters [at] pcez [dot] com) or Sen Speroff (503-621-3331 or sensperoff [at] hotmail [dot] com).

Register Now for CPR / First Aid Class Nov. 10 SRN is offering a discounted price for local residents who want to learn basic CPR and first aid techniques at a 3-hour (non-certification) class to be held Nov. 10 at 7 PM at the Skyline Grange. Mail a check payable to SRN along with your name, address and phone number to Karen Garber, SRN Treasurer, 16238 NW McNamee Rd., Portland 97231. Please also email treasurer [at] srnpdx [dot] org to let us know you're sending payment to register. Registration and payment must be received no later than November 2. ENVIRONMENT:

Protecting Our Birds’ Nests
By Leslie Hildula
Fall is the perfect time to remove your unwanted trees and shrubs like that patch of blackberries in your back yard. Our birds---the Anna hummingbirds, owls, hawks, etc.---begin tree nesting in February. Our songbirds, like robins, song sparrows, and willow flycatchers, begin nesting in April in shrubs and dense vegetation. Birds and their babies are at their most vulnerable during their nesting season.  They can’t fly away.  We can manage our land to have minimal impact on birds. The early nesting season, which is mostly in trees, is Febrary 1 through April 15. The primary nesting season is April 15 through July 31.
