The West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District has awarded Financial Incentives for Sustainable Habitat (FISH) grants totaling $28,808 for eight restoration projects.
FISH grants fund conservation-related work that includes education and community events promoting natural resource conservation. Grants are in amounts up to $10,000 and may include up to a 50% match. Projects must address one or more of these issues: Water Quality, Watershed Health, Flora Health, and Wildlife and/or Fish Habitat.
The following projects have received funding in the August, 2010 cycle:
Skyline Grange Trail & Hedgerow: This 3.45 acre project will install a pollinator hedgerow and trail as well as restore forest health around the Skyline Grange. The project will also be used for native plant/pollinator education among West Hills’ residents. The project request was funded in full for $3,950 (Total project cost; $7,945).
Tualatin Mountain Wetland: This project creates a year-round still-water wetland in the West Hills to provide crucial wildlife habitat to native salamander, waterfowl and mammals which have suffered from declining habitat over time throughout the District. The designed wetland will serve as an educational resource to the community through tours and presentations for environmental organizations, schools and other interested groups. This grant request was funded in full for $10,000 (Total project cost; $33,420).
Brady Blackberry Removal & Planting: This project will control invasive weeds, improve wildlife habitat and forest health on 3 acres in the West Hills through invasive plant removal, native plantings and forest thinning. The grant request was funded in full for $1,320 (Total project cost; $2,735).
Forest Heights Stream Enhancement: This educational restoration demonstration project with the Forest Heights Homeowner’s Association removes invasive weeds and restores a small section (0.08 acre) of Cedar Mill Creek with native plantings. The Association’s green team will conduct 6 volunteer work parties with Forest Heights’ residents. This grant request was funded in full for $965 (Total project cost; $2,795).
Healy Weed Control and Afforestation: This project will control invasive weeds, improve wildlife habitat and forest health on 4.8 acres in the West Hills through invasive plant removal, native plantings and forest thinning. This grant request was funded in full for $1,945 (Total project cost; $3,915).
Mucken Forest Landscape Restoration: This 4 acre project will remove invasive plants, restore native plant/wildlife habitat and erect an experimental bat house on Sauvie Island. This grant request has been partially funded for $4,073 (Total project cost; $10,635).
Orchard Lane Homeowners Association: This project will remove invasive plants and restore native riparian habitat along 1.3 acres of Wood’s Creek in the Ash Creek Neighborhood. The grant request was partially funded for $3,775 (Total project cost; $7,740).
Sweet Haven Weed Control & Restoration: This project controls invasive weeds, reduce erosion, improve wildlife habitat and forest health on 3.45 acres in the West Hills through invasive plant removal, native plantings and forest thinning. The project request was funded in full for $2,780 (Total project cost; $5,660).
