Are You Prepared for a Major Earthquake?
Although our area is subject to wildfire, volcanoes, heavy storms and other natural perils, a major earthquake is likely to cause the most widespread and lasting impact. A subduction zone earthquake offshore may cause 5 minutes of significant shaking. At least we are not directly subject to coastal tsunamis.
Impacts of natural disasters include injury, loss of life, family separation, structural damage, loss of utilities (and water if you’re on a well), and the inability to get food, medicine, etc. due to transportation disruptions. TVFR estimates that only 10% of the general population is adequately prepared to deal with a natural disaster that causes significant casualties and disruption of basic services. Skyline residents cannot rely on public services for immediate help in our relatively sparsely-populated rural area. Self-reliance is critical to survival following a major natural disaster.
TVFR has many publications and information resources to help you understand earthquake hazards and prepare for emergencies. Below is a selection of info resources. Visit the TVFR website for a complete list. They can also send you printed copies of TVFR publications on request by calling 503.649.8577.
