Skyline History Project
The Skyline neighborhood has a long and colorful history, from the Native Americans who first traversed the hill, to the predominately Swiss-German families who later settled here, to the present day. There are many stories about the lives of the pioneers that can be told by their descendants that will be of great interest to current and future residents.
A group of neighbors has come together with ideas and enthusiasm to undertake the collection, transcription and publication of a history of the rural Skyline community. Long-time resident and art historian Donald Jenkins is the facilitator and “quality control person” for the group.
The group plans to reach out to the descendants of the 25 (or so) original pioneer families who first settled the Skyline area in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of their descendants have collected many documents and photographs describing the people who lived here 100 years ago and what their lives were like.
A variety of organizations like the Oregon Historical Society and Northwest Oral History Association could be useful resources in the search for historical records relevant to our community.
The aim of the Skyline History Project will be to disseminate much of the collected information on an on-going basis. Stories will be published regularly in the Skyline Ridge Runner and then added to the Skyline history archive on the SRN website (www.srnpdx.org/history-skyline-ridge). The idea of publishing a printed book or a series of pamphlets is also under consideration. The entire community will benefit from the results.
Anyone interested in Skyline history is welcome to join the effort. The group especially wants to contact anyone who has memories, photos, stories, documents etc. related to the early days of Skyline. They also welcome anyone willing to help undertake this ambitious project, which will include research, interviewing, transcription, editing, photography, etc. Please contact Donald Jenkins at (503) 621-3396 / [email protected].
