Skyline Ridge Runner Style Guide
The Skyline Ridge Runner is the quarterly newsletter of Skyline Ridge Neighbors, the nonprofit neighborhood association representing rural NW Multnomah Co. It’s published in January, April, July, and December and distributed to approx. 1300 households in our area.
We welcome submissions from neighbors, businesses and organizations on any topics that are relevant to our rural neighborhood, including news, events, farm or forest related, gardening, local businesses, animals and wildlife, public services and safety, personal profiles, fiction, local history, humor, and opinion. This style guide will help you prepare your story according to our requirements for formatting and page layout. All submissions may be edited for length and clarity. For info on how to place an ad in the Ridge Runner, please click here.
Submission Deadlines: 15th day of March, June, Sept & December. Please email your submission to [email protected].
Word count: Submission of any length are welcome. One printed page equals approx. 1000 words. Please contact us if your story is over 2000 words.
File formats: Please submit your story in either MS Word (.docx) or Rich Text (.rtf) format. Please do not send files in PDF or Apple Pages formats. You can convert those to Word or text files.
Headlines: You’re welcome to suggest a title for your submission. Titles with a verb are preferred. If it’s an event announcement, add the date at the end of the headline.
Bylines: Include your byline below the headline and add your affiliation if that’s appropriate.
Formatting: All text, subheads etc. should be single spaced and left justified. The first line of paragraphs should not be indented and do not add extra space before or after paragraphs. The program we use for layout (Adobe InDesign) takes care of all formatting.
Phone numbers: Please use dots, not dashes, e.g. 800.555.1212
Hyperlinks: The Ridge Runner is printed so of course live hyperlinks are not possible. When you're on a web page you want to refer to, write a short title for it in your story, then click the link URL in the address bar of your browser to highlight and copy it. Then paste that in your story inside parentheses right after the title. For example, Skyline Ridge Neighbors (http://www.srnpdx.org/). If the URL is really long, you can easily shorten it using TinyURL.
If you are using Word, you can disable automatic link creation. Under the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options. Then click the “AutoCorrect as You Type” tab. In the middle section, uncheck the box for "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks." Do this when you first begin your document.
Photos: You are encouraged to send up to three photos that best illustrate your story’s subject. We’ll choose one for publication. Photos with good contrast and focus are best. Higher resolutions will result in better quality images when printed: 300 dpi is best and 200 dpi is the minimum. Your photo file size should be at least 400 KB. Please send photos in JPG or PNG format as attachments in your email, not embedded within the story. And please supply a descriptive caption for each photo, along with the name of the photographer.
Questions: Please contact us via [email protected].
Thank you for contributing to the Ridge Runner!
